About Fred E. Lawshe & The Fund

Since 1939 the Dakota County Historical Society has been collecting, preserving and sharing our County’s heritage. It is through the generosity of people who recognize the importance of preserving local history that the Society’s programs and services are sustained.

Each year the Dakota County Historical Society makes an appeal for contributions in recognition of Fred Lawshe (1884-1971). It was Fred Lawshe’s energy and inspiration that led to the creation and development of the Dakota County Historical Society.

Fred Lawshe was the first president of the Society and he lobbied long and hard to secure space for a museum. He was the director and curator of the museum until his death in 1971. What began as a hobby led to a full-time passion, especially after he retired in 1958 from his 40 year job as the South St. Paul High School industrial arts teacher. Fred Lawshe logged thousands of hours creating exhibits, giving tours to student groups, and organizing collections.

DCHS has expanded over the years, moving out of the basement of City Hall and into its current home with a permenant Research Library and Museum that is still giving tours to student groups, educating the public on local history, and providing valuable research materials to those interested in Dakota County's past or their own geneological ties to the area. In addition DCHS is actively involved in efforts to preserve and promote sites of historic significance throughout the County.

Now more than ever, local history needs to be cherished. The penetration and dominance of outside powers over local minds and landscapes is steadily growing. Television, freeways, shopping centers, fast food restaurants and suburbanization are overwhelming local identities.

Without the county historical society, those who come after us may find information and insights into their past inaccessible. Please consider a contribution that will enable the Dakota County Historical Society to keep the stories of previous generations, events and places alive.
