Dakota
County’s “dream of destiny” was forged into a reality
during the Twentieth Century. The scientific agri-culture movement that
was embraced and advocated by agricultural-based organizations and businesses
at the begin-ning of the century ensured that Dakota County’s
farms and their well-tended fields would remain “golden in the
sun” far into the future.
The
County’s residents, rural and urban
alike, were not spectators of the events of the Twentieth Century –
they were active participants. Picturing the Past: Events that Shaped
Dakota County in the Twentieth Century is a portrait of individuals,
communities, and a time that frames our present.
Written for use by middle and high school students and adults, Picturing
the Past: Events that Shaped Dakota County in the Twentieth Century
is easily read, with richly illustrated narratives that chronicle Dakota
County’s significant accomplishments and the events that made
them possible.
The 400-page hard cover book is beautifully designed and contains more
than 300 photographs, many from private collections which have never
been seen by the public.

"This welcome book, by skilfully weaving together photos and a narrative,
tells the absorbing story of a people and a place that became one of
Minnesota's keystone counties. It further illuminates how all of us
share in the making of history closest to home!"
Russell Fridley, Former Director
Minnesota Historical Society
"A book that invites us to think about our place in its relationship
to the world. People, places and policies have been woven through text
and sidebars so that the reader both feels and imagines the realities."
Richard Voorhees, Professor of Sociology and Anthropology
Inver Hills Community College
"Schreier knows that local phenomena never take place in isolation.
He tells the Dakota County story as part of state, national, and even
international history. Picturing the Past is a fine example of what
a county historical society can do to disseminate its more recent history,
and I would commend it to others as a model."
Timothy C.Glines, Manager of Outreach Services
